Description

Parachute cord, commonly known as paracord or “550 cord” because of its 550-pound breaking test, was originally developed for use by the US military in the 1930s. It was intended as a light, strong, and durable rope for parachutes, hence the name “paracord”. Parachute cord quickly became a staple in the US military and has been used in a variety of applications ever since.
These days you can find “550 cord” almost anywhere – whether in the military or the civilian world. It’s lightweight, inexpensive, and expendable making it a great utility rope and especially useful in survival situations and outdoor adventures. Parachute cord can be used to secure gear, replace broken shoelaces, and construct shelters. The inner strands can also be removed to create impromptu survival tools like fishing line, fishing lures, traps, slings, and sutures.

Key uses of paracord include

Gear attachment: Securely tying gear to backpacks, tents, or other outdoor equipment.
Shelter construction: Building makeshift shelters using paracord for tying branches and supports.
Repairing equipment: Fixing broken straps, handles, or other parts of gear
Survival tools: Separating the inner strands to create fishing line, snares, sutures, or makeshift sewing thread
Lanyards: Making wrist lanyards to hold keys, knives, or other small tools
Bootlaces: Replacing broken shoelaces with paracord
Tourniquet: In emergency situations, paracord can be used as a makeshift tourniquet to control bleeding
Splints: Creating a splint to immobilize a broken bone with paracord
Crafting: Used in various DIY projects like bracelets, key chains, and dog collars due to its durability and ability to be easily woven
